South Canterbury Rugby Union
Fraser Park

The redevelopment of the stadium began with a clear vision: to create a first-class facility for both sporting activities and community events. Led by the Fraser Park Community Trust, the project was shaped by community consultation and a focus on long-term regional benefits.

At the heart of the project is a 2,038m² multi-purpose pavilion located along Timaru’s Church Street boundary of Fraser Park. Thompson led the vertical build, using steel framing, cross-laminated timber (CLT) flooring, precast panels, glass and bleachers to deliver a robust structure designed to exceed its expected lifecycle.

The new two-tiered venue includes a range of versatile spaces tailored for both sporting and community use. The upper floor offers a flexible layout, including a lounge with a bar and kitchen, as well as offices and meeting rooms. The ground floor features eight changing rooms to accommodate tournaments, along with private showers and toilets. Accessible ramps ensure easy entry to both levels. From a sporting perspective, a centre-field run-on allows all players the opportunity to enter the field through a tunnel, enhancing the game-day experience.

The redevelopment also preserved and strengthened the original grandstand and toilet block at the southern side of the park, maintaining the site’s historic character. Prominent blade signs standing on the eastern side of the field provides high-visibility advertising opportunities generating sustainable revenue for ongoing park operations.

Visitors enter the sports park through Remembrance Boulevard, a tribute to South Canterbury rugby players who gave their lives in service to our country. The pavilion’s official opening included a commemorative ceremony and the laying of wreaths in their memory.

Originally named Fraser Park in 1926, as rugby became established at the site, the ground is now positioned to support new generations of athletes. Beyond sport, the venue is also equipped to host conferences, exhibitions, and functions – solidifying its role as a key regional asset.
